Painted Bunting Bonanza!

Immersive Research Experience

Join University of North Texas's, Dr. Jim Bednarz, and his research team for a once in a lifetime adventure: Painted Bunting Bonanza - An Immersive Reseach Experience!

Join Dr. Bednarz and his research team on their early-morning quest to study the mysterious details of Painted Bunting ecology. You and a friend (or a guest) will meet up with the bunting research team at LLELA at “O dark 30” and participate in a targeted netting operation to capture, color-mark, and collect data on wild Painted Buntings. You will see and have the opportunity to photograph male and female buntings up-closeand-personal, interact with the research team, as well as learn the details of the ongoing research and the nesting ecology of one of North America’s most amazing songbirds. On most netting mornings, we capture and process 6 or more Painted Buntings. However, there aren’t guarantees in science.

To help fund this exciting research on the Painted Bunting, a $250 donation (for 2 people to participate in the Bunting Bonanza) is requested. The donation will cover the cost of field supplies, including transmitters to track the movements of second-year green males.

Available dates:

Thursday, July 17  Monday, July 21  Friday, July 25
Friday, July 18  Tuesday, July 22  Saturday, July 26
Saturday, July 19  Thursday, July 23

Participants will be required to preregister and meet the UNT Painted Bunting Research Team at a designated location and time at LLELA and follow all safety guidelines. If interested, Contant: Dr. Jim Bednarz 807.219.2382 or James.bednarz@unt.edu

Please note that successful capture of Painted Buntings requires suitable weather conditions. Thus, if the weather is not suitable for netting birds on the date of a scheduled bonanza, the UNT team will re-schedule.
